Record-low German immigrants relocating to the United States within the past two decades
The United States has experienced a decrease in appeal as a relocation choice for immigrants, as per the Federal Statistical Office's reports. In 2023, approximately 9,200 Germans migrated to the USA. Excluding the COVID-impacted years, the number of German immigrants to the USA reached its lowest point in two decades. In contrast, around 12,300 Germans moved there in 2003, which equates to a quarter more than in 2023.
Despite the decrease, the U.S. remained one of the top choices for German immigrants in the previous year, with just Switzerland (21,000) and Austria (12,500) attracting more.
According to the United States Census Bureau, there were roughly 520,400 German residents in the USA in 2023. This is a 11% decrease compared to a decade ago. Meanwhile, the number of American citizens living in Germany increased by 29% during the same period, standing at around 125,800 in 2023.
The Office of Immigration Statistics reported approximately 4,200 adult Germans were naturalized in the USA in 2022. This figure has remained fairly consistent over the years, with 2023's data still pending.
The Federal Statistical Office's reports show that despite a decrease in German immigrants, the Number of Germans moving to the USA in 2023 was still significantly higher than its lowest point in two decades, excluding the COVID-impacted years. Even with this decrease, the United States remained one of the top destinations for German immigrants, with a lower Number of immigrants compared to Switzerland and Austria in the previous year.
