Rape allegations against colleagues - Sunak under pressure
Rape allegations against another MP from his Conservative Party are putting British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak under pressure. Calls to investigate the case more closely also grew louder in his own ranks on Monday. Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden had previously admitted that the Tories had apparently paid for the medical treatment of a woman who had reported being raped by the man. The party is taking the allegations very seriously, Dowden said on Sunday evening. The name of the suspect was not initially known.
The case came to light at the weekend. The "Mail on Sunday" newspaper reported, citing a letter from former Tory Chairman Jake Berry and former Chief Whip Wendy Morton to the police, that the allegations had been known for years.
Former Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries also writes about the case in her biography, from which the Mail quoted in advance. According to this, there are said to be up to five victims. Because no action was taken against the politician, the man was able to commit further crimes.
Recently, there have been repeated allegations of sexual assault against Conservative MPs. At the end of October, MP Crispin Blunt was suspended after he was temporarily arrested on suspicion of rape. Peter Bone had previously been banned from parliament for six weeks. He is alleged to have exposed himself to a member of staff. Chris Pincher, who groped two men while drunk in 2022 and resigned his seat a year later, caused a stir. The incident triggered the departure of then Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
The ongoing rape allegations against MPs, including within the Conservative Party in Parliament, have sparked calls for a thorough investigation. The failure to address these allegations in the past has reportedly allowed the suspect to perpetuate additional crimes.
