Radicalism - Quiet commemoration: Mannheim honors slain police officer.

Federal President Steinmeier paid tribute to the fallen police officer Rouven Laur, killed in Mannheim a week ago, in the very place where the incident occurred - the market square. He was accompanied by Minister President Winfried Kretschmann and Interior Minister Thomas Strobl, as well as Laur's parents and other relatives. At 11:34 a.m., the Baden-Württemberg Police asked the public to observe a minute of silence.

Remembering the Victim

A week ago, a 25-year-old Afghan man had attacked five members of the Islam-critical group Pax Europa and a 29-year-old police officer on the market square with a knife. Laur tragically succumbed to his injuries on Sunday. Steinmeier placed a floral tribute at the scene of the crime. There was an outpouring of grief and support on the square in the 300,000-populated city in northern Baden-Württemberg, with over 1,500 to 2,000 people present.

Law Enforcement Gather in Mourning

The federal president was joined by hundreds of residents, including many police officers. The police spokesperson estimated that 1,500-2,000 people attended the event. Applause echoed across the market square after the moment of silence. In solidarity, police officers across the state observed the silence.

Paying Respect

Hundreds of Mannheim police officers showed their respect for their fallen comrade. Around 50 officers from the headquarters marched in front of the flowerbed, remembering their colleague by joining hands. Many police officers wore blue ribbons on their uniforms, a symbol of mourning and solidarity, as suggested by the German Police Union.

Planned Demonstrations

This afternoon, multiple demonstrations and rallies were planned in Mannheim. The German Trade Union Confederation was to hold a rally at 4:30 p.m. under the slogan "Mannheim Stands Together - for Democracy and Diversity" in collaboration with representatives of democratic parties and religious communities.

The AfD was planning to demonstrate at 6:00 p.m., primarily against Islamism. Simultaneously, the Antifa was organizing a demonstration against the AfD rally. The alliance "Mannheim Against the Right" had booked a demonstration at 5:30 p.m.

Uncertainty Surrounds the AfD Demonstration

At the time of writing, it was uncertain whether the AfD would hold the demonstration at the market square. On Thursday, the Administrative Court of Karlsruhe had overturned the city's decision to ban events like demonstrations on the market square. The city of Mannheim immediately announced their intention to appeal the decision. The city aims to relocate the rally to nearby Paradeplatz.
