Putin visits Emirates and Riyadh

It is not often that Putin leaves his country. Now the Kremlin leader is planning two meetings outside Russia. In Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, the aim is to stabilize the oil market. A recent cut in production has hardly been successful.

Russian President Vladimir Putin plans to visit both the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia this Wednesday. "All of this will take place practically within 24 hours," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told the Interfax news agency. The working visits are primarily about bilateral relations, but of course further coordination on the oil markets will also be discussed, Peskov explained when asked.

However, he did not confirm rumors about a possible appearance by the Kremlin leader at the climate summit in Dubai. Putin's foreign policy advisor Yuri Ushakov had already announced the working trips to Saudi Arabia and the Emirates on Monday, but did not give a specific date or further details.

Most recently, the OPEC+ organization, of which Russia is a member, decided to cut oil production further in order to keep prices high. Despite the decision, however, the oil price has continued to fall. Asked about this, Peskov explained that the effect of such decisions is sometimes delayed. In any case, the coordination of measures to stabilize the market will be maintained, he said.

Meeting with Iran's President Raisi in Moscow

On Thursday, Putin plans to meet Iran's President Ebrahim Raisi in the Russian capital Moscow for talks. The Iranian news agency Tasnim reported that an exchange on economic cooperation between the two countries and talks on developments in the Gaza war are planned. Raisi will be accompanied by a delegation, it added. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed the meeting to Russian state media. However, he did not provide any details on the content of the visit.

Iran and Russia have repeatedly spoken out in favor of a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip in recent weeks. Iran is an important supporter of the Islamist Hamas, which rules Gaza, but the leadership in Tehran has vehemently denied any direct involvement in the conflict. According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, Russia has also had contact with Hamas on several occasions this year.

In the face of international sanctions, Iran and Russia have recently expanded their cooperation in the economic and military fields. According to Western findings, the Islamic Republic is also supporting Moscow with so-called kamikaze drones in the war of aggression against Ukraine. Tehran denies this. Just a week ago, Iran announced that it had acquired several fighter planes and helicopters from Russia.
