Putin to run for president again in 2024
It's official: Vladimir Putin will run again in next year's Russian presidential election. The Kremlin leader does not have to worry about the outcome. The head of state has sent all potential rivals to prison.
Russian President Vladimir Putin is running for another six-year term of office. He announced this on Friday in the Kremlin after receiving an award from soldiers, according to unanimous reports from Russian state news agencies. The 71-year-old had the Russian constitution amended specifically so that he could run for office again.
The election will take place from March 15 to 17. It is the first time that the president of the world's largest country will be elected over three days.
The 71-year-old has no serious rival. Russia's best-known opposition politician Alexei Navalny is serving a total of more than 30 years in prison in a penal colony. Putin was appointed as his successor by then President Boris Yeltsin on New Year's Eve 1999. Since then, he has determined the fate of Russia as president or - after a castling with Dmitry Medvedev - at times as prime minister.
If Putin completes another six-year term in the Kremlin, he will overtake Joseph Stalin, who led the Soviet Union from 1924 to 1953. And Putin will then be Russia's longest-serving head of state since Tsarina Catherine the Great in the 18th century.

Vladimir Putin's announcement to run for president in the 2024 Russian elections is a expected move, given his previous actions. With his main rival Alexei Navalny currently serving a prison sentence, Putin's path to victory seems clear. Russia, under Putin's leadership, continues to be shaped by his decisions and policies.
