Putin pays tribute to former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger
Russian President Vladimir Putin has paid tribute to the late former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger as a "wise statesman and visionary". In a letter of condolence to Kissinger's widow on Thursday, Putin referred to the diplomat's contribution to easing tensions in relations between the former Soviet Union and the USA.
The name Henry Kissinger is firmly associated with his pragmatic foreign policy, which in his time paved the way for an easing of international tensions," Putin said according to a Kremlin statement. Kissinger's foreign policy had made possible the most important agreements between the Soviet Union and the USA, "which contributed to strengthening global security".
Kissinger died on Wednesday at the age of 100 at his home in the US state of Connecticut. The Secretary of State under US Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford had an enormous influence on international politics after the Second World War.
