Putin opens new highway from Moscow to St. Petersburg

Earlier, the car ride between Russia's major cities was a misery - many villages, poor asphalt. Now traffic rolls at least four-lane - but the journey costs something.

Prestige project - Putin opens new highway from Moscow to St. Petersburg

After a long construction period, one of Vladimir Putin's key projects in Russia is complete: a 670-kilometer-long new highway between Moscow and St. Petersburg. At the wheel of a domestic Lada Aura, the Kremlin chief opened the last missing section, the bypass of the provincial city of Tver. This section includes a 738-meter bridge over the upper course of the Volga.

Plans for relieving the old route between Russia's major cities date back a long way. The route passed through many villages and was only partially built as an autobahn. Putin ordered the new build in 2004, and construction of the first section began in 2010.

Eight Euros only to the airport

For motorists, the new M-11 route is almost everywhere toll-road. The most expensive stretch is the first one from Moscow to Sheremetyevo Airport and beyond, for which 795 Rubles (approximately 8 Euros) are due on weekdays. The total cost for the entire route depends on the day and tariff and amounts to more than 3000 Rubles.

From Tver, the Kremlin chief also opened a second important new section, as reported by the Tass agency: the bypass of the city of Togliatti with a 3.7-kilometer bridge over the Volga at its lower reaches.

  3. Along the new M-11 route, motorists will be able to enjoy the smooth ride of Russian-made cars, such as the Lada Aura, on the newly constructed autobahn sections.
  4. After the completion of this prestige project, Vladimir Putin is expected to take a twirl in his Auto along the new highway, celebrating the success of this ambitious project.
  5. Upon completion, this prestige project will be hailed as a significant step towards modernizing Russia's infrastructure and boosting the country's overall prestige on the global stage.
  6. With the construction of the new M-11 highway, drivers in Russia may now avoid the usual traffic congestion and enjoy a smoother drive on the autobahn, much like the experience in other major European cities such as Berlin.
