Putin makes dozens of military officers generals
After massive losses in Ukraine, Putin orders the army to be expanded last week. The Kremlin chief has now promoted more than 60 officers. Among them are military officers who are controversial among Russian war bloggers.
According to official figures, Russian President Vladimir Putin has awarded dozens of general ranks in the army and security forces. 67 officers received a new rank, according to the decree . These include men who have been blamed by Russian military bloggers in the past for high army losses in Moscow's war of aggression against Ukraine.
Accordingly, 20 officers were promoted from colonel to the lowest general rank of major general in the army. At the same time, four naval officers were appointed rear admiral, the equivalent rank to major general.
Chechen Akhmed Sukhrab, a controversial figure among military bloggers in Moscow, was promoted from major general to lieutenant general. Sukhrab is said to be partly responsible not only for the loss-making and ultimately unsuccessful Russian attempts to storm the Ukrainian city of Vuhledar in the fall of 2022, but also for the deaths of many soldiers near the city of Kremmina that year. According to the report, Sukhrab had made his subordinates line up and wait for him to speak. During this time, a Ukrainian artillery shell hit those waiting.
There were also promotions in the National Guard, the fire department, the prison service and the bailiff service. In the National Guard, the Chechen Sharip Delimkhanov was promoted to lieutenant general. He is the brother of Duma deputy Adam Delimkhanov and a close relative of Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov.
According to the Russian military, six of its own generals have been killed since the start of the war of aggression in Ukraine in February 2022. Ukraine believes that around a dozen generals have been killed. Most recently, Russian Major General Vladimir Savadsky is said to have died last week when a landmine exploded. The information cannot be independently verified.
