Putin has arrived in Kazakhstan for a visit
Russia's President Vladimir Putin has arrived in Kazakhstan for a visit. In the capital Astana, he will participate in a two-day meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), as the Kremlin announced on Wednesday. Additionally, bilateral talks with summit participants are planned.
During his visit to Kazakhstan, Putin is likely to meet his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Ankara's Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan announced on Monday. The last meeting between the two leaders took place in September 2023 in Sochi, Russia. Turkey has been trying to maintain relations with both countries since the beginning of Russia's offensive in Ukraine. Ankara has also offered to act as a mediator in the conflict several times.
The SCO comprises nine countries that represent approximately half of the world population. Permanent members include the current host Kazakhstan, India, China, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and since last year Iran. It is expected that Belarus will be admitted to the organization this year. The decision was made at a virtual summit organized by India last year.
According to the Kremlin, the heads of state and government of the member countries will discuss "the current situation and prospects for further deepening comprehensive cooperation within the organization and improving its activities" at their annual meeting.
