Public viewing will probably fall flat in the south

Starting from 9 pm, the German football national team will fight for their entry into the quarterfinals of the Home-EM. Many fans will have to give up on Public Viewing events and Fan miles. Meteorologists warn in the South and Southwest of Germany for extremely heavy rain and large hailstones.

In the South and Southwest of Germany, heavy weather is threatening again. According to the German Weather Service (DWD), regions likely to be affected include Baden-Württemberg, Rheinland-Pfalz, Saarland, Hessen, and Nordrhein-Westfalen. These weather conditions fall right into the EM-Quarterfinal match of the German football national team, which starts at 9 pm on ZDF and ntv.de-Liveticker in Dortmund. During the night, Niedersachsen and Thüringen should also prepare for heavy rain.

Many spectators will have to deal with significant restrictions at Public Viewing events due to the meteorological conditions. According to the meteorologists from wetter.de, the fan miles in Saarbrücken, Stuttgart, and Frankfurt are very likely to be closed for the duration of the Germany game. If the quarterfinal goes into overtime, there is also a significant risk of heavy weather for Public Viewing events in Cologne, Dortmund, Kassel, Hannover, and Nuremberg.

According to the reports, heavy showers with up to 80 liters of rain per square meter within a few hours are possible. In addition, damage from medium to large hailstones and storm- to hurricane-force winds of up to or over 120 kilometers per hour (km/h) are expected. Even individual tornados cannot be ruled out. Besides fan miles, festivalgoers and camping sites are particularly at risk this weekend.

The weather situation will remain the same on Sunday. Germany-wide, there is a risk of heavy rain and strong thunderstorms. Locally, 50 to 80 liters of rain can accumulate within a short time. More than 100 liters cannot be excluded in individual cases. The low-pressure system will not move away until Monday, and it will become noticeably cooler but also calmer.

It will be calmer on Monday

As early as Thursday, heavy weather caused numerous interventions by the fire department and traffic disruptions in large parts of Germany. Affected areas included Baden-Württemberg, Hessen, Thüringen, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Lower Saxony, Hamburg, and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

As early as June, it had rained quite a bit. According to the DWD monthly balance, an average of 91 liters per square meter fell. The highest monthly rainfall amounts, according to the meteorologists, were at the Alpine fringe: More than 250 liters have fallen there so far in June. In northern Brandenburg, it remained significantly drier with under 20 liters per square meter.

Despite the warned extreme weather conditions, the German football national team's quarterfinal match against International opponents will still be broadcast at 9 pm on ZFD and ntv.de-Liveticker in Dortmund. Due to the weather, many Public Viewing events and fan miles in affected regions such as Saarbrücken, Stuttgart, and Frankfurt might be closed during the game. The German Weather Service (DWD) forecasts substantial rain, large hailstones, and storm-force winds, potentially even tornados, posing risks to fan miles, festivals, and camping sites.
