Unesco World Heritage List - Public viewing in Schwerin for the World Heritage decision
Decision in New Delhi
The UNESCO World Heritage Committee is meeting, according to the German UNESCO Commission, in New Delhi from the 21st to the 31st of July. Nearly 30 states worldwide have been nominated for the list of the Cultural and Natural Heritage of the World, among them the ancient Via Appia in Southern Italy, the ruins city of Gedi on Kenya's east coast, and the Badain-Jaran-Waste in China with over 100 lakes.
Germany's Recommendations
From Germany, in addition to the Residence Ensemble Schwerin with 38 historical buildings and sites, the settlement of the Moravian Brethren in Saxony has also been recommended for inclusion, in conjunction with settlements of the Christian Community in Northern Ireland and the USA. They are intended to be combined into a transnational World Heritage Site, as stated.
Over 1,000 World Heritage Sites Worldwide
The UNESCO World Heritage includes more than 1,000 sites worldwide, of which 52 are in Germany. Among them are, for example, the caves and ice age art of the Swabian Alb, the Wadden Sea and, since last year, the Jewish-medieval heritage in Erfurt. In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the old towns of Stralsund and Wismar have already received the coveted status of World Cultural Heritage. Old beech forests at the Mecklenburg Lake District and on Rügen are among the World Natural Heritage sites.
The World Heritage Coordinator of the City of Schwerin, Linda Holung, will be present in India when the decision is made, as reported by NDR. "We are closer to the World Heritage title than ever before," she told the broadcaster. Now it's time to press the thumbs. The decision will be made in New Delhi and UNESCO is independent.
