PS VR2 Set to Launch on Computers by Year's End
The PlayStation VR2 debuted in 2023, providing immersive VR gaming experiences on the PlayStation 5 along with new games, but its compatibility was limited to the PS5. Speculations about a PC adapter for the PSVR2 have been circulating, and Sony had previously applied for a certification for the device. Recently, Sony has confirmed their intention to make the PC adapter official.
Set to be released on August 7, the PSVR2 PC adapter comes at a price of $59.99. It will be available at certain retailers and the official PlayStation website, depending on the region. To use this connector, you'll also need a Displayport 1.4 cable in addition to Windows 10 or Windows 11. Other conditions for compatibility include:
Minimum requirements for PSVR2 on PC
- Operating System: Windows 10 or Windows 11 (both 64-bit)
- CPU: Intel Core i5-7600 / AMD Ryzen 3 3100 (Zen 2 architecture or later is necessary)
- GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 or higher (Turing architecture or later is mandatory), AMD Radeon RX 5500XT or higher / AMD Radeon RX 6500XT or higher
- DisplayPort: DisplayPort 1.4 (must have a standard DisplayPort or Mini DisplayPort output port)
- USB: Required for direct connection
- Bluetooth: Bluetooth 4.0 or later. Information on compatible Bluetooth adapters will be provided closer to the release.
This announcement brings the PlayStation VR2 into the vast library of SteamVR games. The May State of Play event also announced upcoming PS VR2 games for the PS5. Of particular interest is the captivating-looking Alien: Rogue Incursion, which is also slated for PC, expanding choices for Sony headset owners.
However, the PSVR2 will not have access to all its features when connected to a PC. Prominent missing features include headset feedback, HDR, eye tracking, adaptive triggers, and haptic feedback. On the plus side, other features such as 4K visuals, the PS VR2's 110-degree field of view, finger touch detection, and see-through view will be available. Sony has also mentioned that 3D audio will work on the PSVR2 during PC play, but it will utilize SteamVR's audio technology instead of the PlayStation 5's Tempest 3D Audiotech.
Despite being a wired headset, the PSVR2 boasts a halo-style strap, redesigned controllers, and compatibility with the console, making it an enticing option in the PC market.
