They are an eye-catcher and a popular motif for many tourists: the bearskin hats worn by the royal guards in London. But the fact that real fur is used for them has led to criticism.

British general election - Protest against bearskin hats in British general election

Animal protectors protested on the sidelines of the British parliamentary election against the production of well-known bearskin hats for royal soldiers using real bear fur. Among the onlookers was also an activist dressed as a bear. A poster from the organization Peta read: "Sir Keir: Protect my skin! Vote for synthetic bearskin hats."

Starmer's Social Democrats are leading in all polls significantly ahead of the Conservative Party of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and are expected to achieve a historic victory in the parliamentary election.

Animal protectors have long been demanding that the British Ministry of Defense discontinue its practice of using real bear fur for the hats of the royal guardsmen. The ministry, in turn, emphasizes that the used bear fur comes from legal and licensed hunts. In addition, there is currently no alternative that meets the required standards. The traditional bearskin hats of the royal guards are a popular photo motif for tourists in London.
