Criminality - Prosecutor sees police blameless in burglar's death

After the death of a suspected intruder at a police operation at the end of April, the Mannheim Public Prosecutor's Office sees no fault in the involved officers. The investigations are completed, a spokesperson for the Public Prosecutor's Office stated. These findings showed that the suspect had jumped from a roughly twelve meter high scaffolding at a multi-family house and fallen into a cellar opening. He died on the spot from his injuries.

The investigating authorities reported at the time that the man had attempted to break into the five-story multi-family house via the scaffolding construction. Residents and occupants had reportedly called the police. When the response units arrived, the man was lying on the ground at the top of the scaffolding and trying to hide. The officers had attempted to pull him into a living quarter. However, according to the statement, this man resisted with punches and tearings. In the further course of events, the man had reportedly sat on the edge of the scaffolding. Witness statements confirmed that he fell from the scaffolding without the influence of the officers, as stated in the statement at the time.

  1. The Prosecutor's Office in Baden-Württemberg, specifically the Public Prosecutor's Office Mannheim, has concluded that no wrongdoing occurred during the police operation that resulted in the suspect's fatal fall from a scaffolding.
  2. The Emergency Medical Services were also called to the scene due to the severity of the suspected intruder's injuries after he fell from the twelve-meter high scaffolding at the multi-family house.
  3. The Police operation in Mannheim was initiated following reports of criminal activity, with residents and occupants of the multi-family house contacting the local Police.
  4. The Public Prosecutor's Office in Mannheim emphasized that the officers involved in the operation acted appropriately, and their actions did not contribute to the man's death.
  5. The Police operation in Mannheim serves as a reminder of the challenges and dangers that law enforcement personnel face in their mission to maintain public safety and address criminality.
