Proportion of part-time employees in Germany has risen to a record high
The proportion of part-time employees in Germany rose to a record high in the third quarter of this year. At 39.2 percent, the part-time rate was 0.3 percentage points above the previous year's figure and thus higher than ever before, the Institute for Employment Research (IAB), based in Nuremberg, explained on Tuesday. At the same time, more people had a part-time job.
The main reason for the high part-time rate was an increase in employment in the hospitality industry and in the education and teaching sectors, as the IAB explained. There is a high proportion of part-time contracts in these sectors.
According to the IAB, 4.47 million people also had a part-time job in the past quarter - 2.9 percent more than in the same period of the previous year. "This means that the development is once again following the long-term upward trend from before the pandemic," explained the researchers. Around one in ten employees has a part-time job.
According to the IAB, the volume of work remained the same as in the same quarter of the previous year at 15.76 billion hours. It was therefore slightly below the pre-corona level of the third quarter of 2019. The average working hours per employee fell by 0.7%, while the number of people in employment increased by 0.7% to 46.04 million.
