US election campaign - Prominent US Governors rally behind Harris
After Joe Biden's withdrawal from the US Presidency race, prominent democratic governors have rallied behind Vice President Kamala Harris as the front-runner. "Tough. Fearless. Tenacious. In the face of our threatened democracy and uncertain future, there is no one more qualified to pursue the case against Donald Trump's dark vision and lead our country in a healthier direction than the Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris," wrote California Governor Gavin Newsom on the platform X.Newsom, who himself was considered a potential successor to Biden, played on Harris' past as California Attorney General and her opponent's status as a convicted criminal.
Similarly, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro expressed his support for Harris. North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper also did so. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, who is a crucial and contested swing state, had already ruled out her candidacy. She, however, held back on a direct endorsement for Harris.
Biden had suggested Harris as his successor during his announcement of his withdrawal.
