Theodor-Heuss-Platz - Pro-Palestinian vigil at least until the end of July
The Palastinian vigil near the University of Hamburg can be held for at least another three weeks. According to a decree from the assembly authority, the protest camp, which was set up at Theodor-Heuss-Platz opposite Dammtor railway station in early May, is initially allowed to remain until July 31, police spokeswoman Sandra Levgrün told the German Press Agency.
Additionally, participants have been permitted to use the adjacent Moorweide for larger events with over 100 attendees temporarily. The assembly authority is following a court ruling from the end of last month, Levgrün said. Thirty tents instead of ten can now be set up for the vigil on Theodor-Heuss-Platz.
The use of the Moorweide was initially banned in its entirety by the police. "It is and remains a green and recreational area that must be protected," Levgrün said. The temporary use of the area can be clearly defined on a map. "The police are monitoring this," she added.
Constitutional Protection is observing the Camp
The assembly on the Moorweide is under the motto "Hands off Gaza". The group "Students for Palestine HH" (Students for Palestine HH) and the Palestinian group "Thawra" have called for the camp on Instagram, among others.
The camp is being monitored by the Constitutional Protection. "There is hardly a place that is monitored as intensively as this one. Every letter that is written anywhere on a banner is analyzed," Innensenator Andy Grote (SPD) recently said at the presentation of the Constitutional Protection Report. Transparencies have already been removed.
Background of the protests is the unprecedented massacre with over 1,200 deaths, which terrorists from Hamas and other groups committed in Israel on October 7. Israel responded with massive air raids and a ground offensive. In the face of the high number of civilian casualties and the catastrophic humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, Israel is facing international criticism.
