- Prison hostage crisis in Russia concludes in lethal outcome; seven fatalities ensue
During a riot at a Russian maximum-security prison housing serious offenders, numerous casualties were reported. The four individuals holding hostages were eliminated by sharpshooters, and the imprisoned guards were liberated, as stated by the National Guard, in an incident that unfolded in Surowikino, Volgograd region.
The prison administration also confirmed the death of three hostages. Four individuals, comprising three guards and one inmate, sustained injuries at the hands of the hostage-takers but managed to flee.
"Two of the injured are in a grave condition," said Anatoly Sebelyov, the head of the local health department. These gentlemen endured stab and cut injuries during the attack on the hostage-takers. The incident took place during a disciplinary hearing at the penitentiary. The exact means through which the prisoners procured the stabbing weapons and overpowered the guards remain a mystery.
As per Kremlin-affiliated Telegram channels, the hostage-takers might have affiliations with the Islamic State (IS) terror group. One of the attackers divulged in a video that his actions were retaliatory. He desired revenge for the mistreatment of the suspects linked to the terrorist attack on the Crocus City Mall occasion space in Moscow.
In that attack in March, over a hundred lives were claimed. Upon their apprehension and later court presentation, the suspects displayed signs of abuse. A criminal investigation has been initiated for the hostage-taking. As per Kremlin updates, Russian President Vladimir Putin has been apprised of the hostage situation.
