After a funding controversies, Japan's Prime Minister Fumio Kishida decides to step down. His substitution has been officially announced.
Japan's Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has selected ex-Defense Minister Shigeru Ishiba as their new party leader, essentially making him the nation's new prime minister. Given LDP's majority in Japan's lower house of parliament, Ishiba's ascension to prime minister of the world's fourth-largest economy is seemingly unavoidable on October 1.
At 67, the new leader will replace Kishida, who chose not to seek re-election following the party donation debacle. In Japan, the head of the ruling party typically serves as the prime minister as well.
Ishiba emerged victorious from a runoff election against Sanae Takaichi, the hardline minister for economic security, who aimed to become the first woman to ever hold the highest government position.
