Heavy transport - Previous submarine unloaded from water onto land
The decommissioned Marine-U-Boat U17 can continue its journey on land: At Haßmersheim (Neckar-Odenwald-Kreis), the 350-tonne steel colossus was loaded onto a low-loader. Everything went smoothly, said a spokesperson. The low-loader will take the last part of the journey to Sinsheim. U17 is expected to arrive there, according to the organizers of the Technikmuseen Sinsheim Speyer, on July 28.
As preparation for the hours-long maneuver, U17 had already been pumped up in the past few days - so high that the low-loader could drive under the U-boat and charge it. Previously, U17 had been lying on its floating pontoon parallel to the shore. On Saturday, the towline was positioned so that it was perpendicular to the shore and the low-loader could approach.
U17 arrived in Haßmersheim on Tuesday. Hundreds of onlookers had pilgrimaged to the Neckar for the launch ceremony, where the U-boat was greeted with cannon shots. U17 is not expected to continue its journey for transport until Sunday. The destination for the day is the Five Meadows Valley at Bad Rappenau (Landkreis Heilbronn).
U17 was commissioned in 2010
The approximately 50-meter long U-Boat had been in service since 1973 and was decommissioned by the Navy in 2010. Over a year ago, a port crane lifted U17 in Kiel onto a floating pontoon, which initially brought the steel giant to Speyer. There, among other things, weight was removed.
The entire project costs the Technikmuseen approximately two million Euros and is mainly financed through donations. U17 is expected to go on display in the Technikmuseum Speyer from summer 2025.
