Previous New York Governor David Paterson and his stepson encounter assault near their residence.
At around 8:30 p.m. ET on Second Avenue close to East 96th Street, law enforcement officials arrived to find a 20-year-old man with facial wounds and a 70-year-old man with head injuries, as reported by the New York City Police Department without disclosing the identities of the victims.
No details were given about the cause of their injuries or the events leading up to the incident, but the authorities stated that they are investigating and searching for at least five suspects.
Paterson and his stepson were reportedly attacked by a group of individuals with a prior history of interactions with his stepson, as per a statement from Paterson's spokesperson, Sean Darcy, to CNN. Both sustained injuries but managed to fend off their attackers. They were subsequently hospitalized and later discharged, according to an update from Darcy.
Darcy also mentioned that Governor Paterson's only wish is for people to avoid exploiting this unfortunate incident for personal or political gain. The governor and his wife, Mary, expressed gratitude for the swift response of the police and the support received from a wide range of sources.
Paterson, who became governor in March 2008 following the resignation of Gov. Eliot Spitzer, left office in December 2010.
In a final note, Darcy mentioned that Paterson's primary focus at the moment is the New York Mets' playoff game against the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday afternoon.
"Governor Paterson's main concern today is Kodai Senga and the New York Mets, but we will provide any additional updates as necessary," Darcy concluded.
Despite the incident involving Paterson and his stepson, Governor Paterson urges people to avoid exploiting it for personal or political gain, aligning with the sentiment expressed by his wife, Mary. In light of Paterson's interest in sports, his primary focus shifts towards the New York Mets' upcoming playoff game.
