After a year has passed since the incredible event. - Present-day condition of the kids saved from the Colombian rainforest

What an incredible, heartwarming moment that brought happiness to an entire nation and solace to the world: a year after the safe recovery of the four children who were lost in the Amazon rainforest for 40 days, Colombia honored this day. June 9th had become a significant milestone in Colombia's history, representing the courage and resilience of the children and the unity exhibited by the Colombians during the search. The Family Welfare Agency of the nation (ICBF) noted this on a Sunday, while the South American country's military celebrated their "Operation Hope" as one of the most extraordinary humanitarian endeavors in the country's history.

The children, ranging in age from 1 to 13, had been on a plane crash in the Caqueta department on May 1, 2023, while on their way to Bogota with their mother, who escaped threats from rebel groups. Tragically, the mother and two other adults lost their lives in the accident. The hero, a stray dog, played a crucial role in the rescue of the children. The whole story is detailed here:

Upon finding signs of life with objects and food remains, the military mounted an unmatched search effort. They employed dogs, soldiers, and local indigenous communities. And eventually, they succeeded. The three girls and the boy had been wandering through the jungle for more than a month, most likely by themselves, and had evaded soldiers' searches due to their fear.

Status of the Children: Colombia's Indigenous Youth

The children received expert care from trauma professionals and doctors, and are now healthy and well-nourished. They have never been apart since their rescue. Instead, they spent their time learning and experiencing the life that children their age should live. A team of experts focuses on preserving the ethnic traditions of the children, who are being raised away from their indigenous community. Their relatives were by their side to offer comfort.

"El Universal" reported that the children remain in state care. In August 2023, their father was arrested for allegations of sexual harassment, and the ICBF had previously barred him from seeing the children.

The children, now thriving under the care of the Family Welfare Agency in Colombia, often visit the military base to express their gratitude for the role they played in their rescue. Vowing to protect and support these indigenous youth, the Colombian military continues to foster a strong bond with them, even conducting jungle survival workshops as part of their 'Operation Hope' initiatives in the jungle.
