US election campaign - Politologist: Attack "another low point" in US Politics

Political scientist David Sirakov described the shootings at the former US President Donald Trump as "another low point in the political confrontation in the USA." He told the German Press Agency that "this is probably the worst thing that could happen to US society in its current state. The already deep divisions will become even deeper and wider." Unfortunately, in the US, violence has become increasingly used as a tool in the political sphere in recent years. "The storming of the Capitol on January 6, 2021, is just an example."

Sirakov, head of the Atlantic Academy Rhineland-Palatinate, sees the consequences in two ways. "On the one hand, this could lead to mobilization of voters for Trump. On the other hand, it will most likely result in a further focus on campaign issues regarding internal security. It will be about gun legislation, but also about the reliability of security agencies. However, it is still too early to say whether the attack was decisive for the election."

Biden's withdrawal?

According to Sirakov, the attack and the "iconic images" will shape the further course of the campaign. "Donald Trump will present himself as unbreakable and try to make as much capital out of it as possible. The Democrats, on the other hand, will be pushed further into defense."

The discussion about Joe Biden's age and fitness for the presidency may recede somewhat. "But at the cost that Trump dominates the reporting to his advantage." The Democrats need to come up with something to act and not just react in the campaign. "Perhaps this will even lead to a possible withdrawal of Biden's candidacy," said Sirakov. "That could take some momentum away from Trump's campaign."
