George Clooney, an actor from Hollywood, reportedly had contact with former US President Joe Biden before the latter's op-ed in the "New York Times," according to media reports. The former president didn't encourage Clooney's statements, but didn't try to stop him either, Politico reported, citing unnamed sources familiar with the matter.

Clooney's call for Biden to drop out

A representative from Obama's team declined to comment on the matter to Politico. The portal made no mention of when or how the exchange between the Democrat and the Hollywood star was said to have taken place.

Clooney wrote in the "New York Times" that Biden should drop out of the race for the US presidential candidacy. The 81-year-old wasn't fit during a fundraiser in Hollywood three weeks ago, the 63-year-old wrote. The text generated significant attention.

At the glamorous event in Los Angeles, Obama also appeared. Obama defended Biden publicly after his TV debate debacle against the Republican challenger Donald Trump. "Bad debates happen. Believe me, I know," Obama wrote after the TV spectacle.

Nancy Pelosi consults with representatives

According to Politico, Democratic party leader Nancy Pelosi is also reportedly consulting with representatives about her stance on Biden. In the report, she is said to have expressed significant doubts to the representatives about Biden's ability to win the presidential election in November against Trump.

The former Speaker of the US House of Representatives is said to have advised some representatives in contested states to wait until after the NATO summit in Washington to publicly criticize Biden out of respect. The summit in the US capital is set to end today, and Biden is scheduled to give a closing press conference in the German night on Friday.
