Politician Wagenknecht envisions BSW holding power at the state government level.
Close to the Thuringia state election, Sahra Wagenknecht of the BSW is contemplating the potential of her party participating in the government again. She already has a clear choice.
bw-chair Sahra Wagenknecht thinks her newly formed party could take on the responsibility of governing following the Thuringia, Saxony, and Brandenburg state elections. In Thuringia, the BSW aims to make Katja Wolf, their lead candidate, the Minister-President, as Wagenknecht shared with Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland (RND).
"We're equipped for governing. We've got some damn intelligent folks in the states. I've no doubt we've got top-notch individuals ready to tackle state government responsibilities." Wagenknecht sang the praises of Katja Wolf, the ex-Linkspartei mayor of Eisenach, for her "distinctive, long-term administrative experience." Wolf, in her opinion, "has what it takes to fill roles as a Minister, or even Minister-President - if we outrank the CDU, which would be peachy."
Despite this, the BSW won't enter the elections with a coalition agreement, Wagenknecht revealed to RND. "We're not desperate to get into a government. We need to deliver if we govern. Something significant has to change for the people, or we'd disappoint them terribly by forming a coalition, which we're not gonna do." Wagenknecht suggested potential discussions on federal constitutional initiatives, such as "an initiative to exempt all statutory pensions below 2000 euros from tax."
Based on a recent Infratest Dimap survey for MDR, if a new Thuringia state parliament were elected on a Sunday, the BSW would get 21% of the votes. As a result, the alliance would be the third most powerful force behind the AfD (28%) and CDU (23%). The ruling Left Party would stand at 11%, the SPD at 7%, while the Greens wouldn't make the cut with just 4%. The FDP would fall short of the parliamentary threshold with less than 3%. Infratest Dimap gathered data from 1172 representative Thuringian and Thuringian citizens by phone (687) and online (485) between the 13th and 16th of June.
