Police report that over 10 people sustained injuries during a shooting incident at a rooftop party in Wisconsin.
Police are still investigating the extent of injuries among victims being treated at local hospitals after a shooting incident that occurred during what they believe was a high school graduation party. Authorities have not disclosed the number of victims or their ages, although it's known that those affected range from 14 to 23 years old. None of the injuries are currently considered life-threatening.
Responding to the emergency, officers from various law enforcement agencies arrived at the scene where they found individuals in a panic, trying to escape the apartment building. The first officer on the scene reported seeing many people fleeing the building and had to climb 12 flights of stairs to reach others.
Emergency services transported five individuals with gunshot wounds to the hospital, while others came on their own, according to the Madison Fire Department. Four ambulances and two engine companies were on hand to help with the medical response, treating and transporting patients as needed.
Some individuals at the scene sustained only minor injuries while trying to escape, but refused medical attention.
"We're working now to determine the extent of those injuries," said Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes, "but fortunately, none of them appear to be life-threatening in this chaotic scene."
Police are currently searching for suspects and no arrests have been made. No further information about the incident has been released.
Eyewitness Mike Verveer, an alder who represents downtown in Madison's Common Council, described his initial reaction when he heard the commotion:
"I was lying in bed at my house... and heard siren after siren roll by and roll through the neighborhood," said Verveer. "I would never have guessed it was something as horrific as a mass shooting. I was absolutely horrified. The sirens didn't stop."
