Police register more attacks on refugees than in 2022
The number of attacks on refugees, asylum seekers and their accommodation has increased significantly. According to an answer from the German government to a question from the Left Party, there have already been more such attacks in the first nine months of this year than in the entire previous year. According to the information, 1515 such attacks were recorded in the first three quarters of this year, compared to 1371 attacks in 2022.
In the third quarter of this year, there were a total of 30 cases in which accommodation was the scene or target of a politically motivated crime, according to statistics obtained by Deutsche Presse-Agentur. Three of these cases involved violent crimes. The majority of attacks on accommodation - 23 crimes - were attributed by the police to the right-wing scene.
Left: suitable protection concepts needed
The police also assume that 375 of the 417 politically motivated crimes registered in this period outside of accommodation that were directed against asylum seekers or recognized refugees were right-wing crimes. Accordingly, 19 crimes were attributed to the "foreign ideology" phenomenon, while two were classified as left-wing motivated. In some cases, the background remained unclear. Violence was involved in a total of 55 cases.
"Every day, refugees in Germany are attacked, humiliated and treated with hostility," said Clara Bünger, a member of the Left Party. The federal and state governments urgently need to develop and implement suitable protection concepts. Bünger sees one reason for the increase in attacks in the current debate on asylum issues. In her opinion, this is "paving the way for racist mobilization on the streets and acts of violence against refugees".
The increase in attacks on refugees and asylum seekers has been linked to the rise of extremist ideologies, resulting in a higher crime rate against them. This is evident in the data, which shows that over 1500 attacks on refugees have been reported in the first nine months of this year, surpassing the total number from 2022. Moreover, the majority of these attacks within accommodation are being attributed to the right-wing scene, highlighting the need for effective protection concepts to combat this trend.
