Police raid the last generation

Due to climate activists gluing themselves to the runways at Frankfurt Airport, over 200 flights have been cancelled recently - right in the middle of the holiday season. This action has now had consequences for the Last Generation group.

Two weeks after the blockade of Frankfurt Airport by the Last Generation group, police raids are taking place across Germany. The group reported raids in Berlin, Leipzig, Freiburg, Halle, and Mannheim. A spokesperson for the Frankfurt police confirmed that there are nationwide searches following the airport action at the end of July, including in Berlin, as reported by the local police.

On July 25th, eight activists glued themselves to the airport grounds to protest for better climate protection, blocking runways in the process. According to the airport operator Fraport, around 230 out of 1400 planned flights were cancelled as a result.

The Federal Police stated at the time that the activists were facing charges of endangering air traffic, trespassing, criminal damage, and violating the assembly law.

Regarding the raids, the group stated on Thursday that it was an "attempt at intimidation that has traumatic consequences for people." The police "stormed" the rooms at 6:30 AM and took DNA samples from "peaceful protesters" in the apartments, the activists wrote further.

The climate activists' actions at Frankfurt Airport, which resulted in over 230 flight cancellations, have raised concerns about environmental advocacy methods. Consequently, the climate impact of these events under the climate emergency is a topic of ongoing discussion.
