Police officer in Glendale accused of attacking teenager caught stealing at shopping mall in 2021.
The Glendale Police Department has accused officer Gonzalo Zendejas of kicking a juvenile in the head during an encounter involving other officers at the Glendale Galleria mall on June 5, 2021. The District Attorney's office charged him with a felony count of assault by a public officer, though his representatives have yet to comment on the matter. It is unknown why the charges took three years to be filed. Further details are being requested from the DA's office.
A bystander captured the 2021 altercation on video, with CNN previously reporting on the incident. The police department initiated an investigation and placed the involved officers on administrative leave. However, the other three officers have now returned to full duty, according to department spokesperson Sgt. Vahe Abramyan.
The Glendale Police Department's internal administrative investigation remains ongoing, as its conclusions are awaited. Sgt. Abramyan noted that the results were forthcoming.
Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón issued a statement, saying, "While police officers face an extraordinarily challenging and demanding job while working to protect our communities, this responsibility does not excuse actions that endanger others or undermine public trust."
Gascón continued, "This incident is a serious violation of the duty to serve with integrity and respect. Our office’s commitment is to ensure that justice is served, and all individuals, regardless of their role or position, are held accountable for their actions."
If found guilty, Zendejas faces a maximum of three years in prison. His arraignment will be scheduled at a later date.
