Police investigate potential motive after shootings in Albstadt

On the Swabian Alb, a 63-year-old man shoots his son and mother-in-law. His wife and daughter are seriously injured. After that, the man commits suicide.

Following the triple homicide in Albstadt, Baden-Württemberg, the Hechingen Public Prosecutor's Office and Reutlingen Police have provided initial information regarding a possible motive. There are indications of financially motivated fears for the future and a psychological condition of the 63-year-old shooter, the investigators stated.

The previously uncharged man had been undergoing voluntary stationary treatment. He had interrupted this treatment for a family meeting over the weekend.

During this meeting, he shot and killed his mother-in-law and son, and seriously injured his wife and daughter with gunshots, before taking his own life with a firearm. The man legally owned the weapons as a hunter.
