Police arrested assistant of escaped killer
A murderer incarcerated in Baden-Württemberg escapes during a supervised outing. It takes nine months to recapture him abroad. Now, a man is arrested for allegedly aiding the inmate's escape.
A 45-year-old man from the Germersheim district has been arrested for allegedly assisting the Bruchsal murderer's escape in October. As reported by the Landau Prosecutor's Office, the suspected accomplice was presented to a Landau District Court judge on Sunday. The judge issued an arrest warrant, and the suspect was immediately taken to a prison.
According to the reports, the suspect was involved in the escape plan of the then 43-year-old inmate and helped him flee from the Bruchsal prison. The convicted murderer remained at large for nine months until he was rearrested in Moldova in July following international cooperation. The case kept the public in suspense for months.
The escaped murderer was serving a life sentence in Bruchsal, with the Karlsruhe Regional Court also determining the particular gravity of the offense in the 2012 trial. He had strangled a 44-year-old man. During a supervised outing at a gravel pit in Germersheim, Rhineland-Palatinate, the 44-year-old murderer fled into an adjacent forest area while being supervised by two prison officers.
The Landau Prosecutor's Office alleges that the now-arrested man picked up the murderer in his car at that location. The murderer's electronic ankle monitor was later found in the Germersheim city area. Before his escape, he had met with his wife and children at the gravel pit. This was the eighth such supervised outing for the German-Kazakh inmate.
After the incident, the Ministry of Justice acknowledged that mistakes during the outing may have facilitated the man's escape despite being supervised by two prison staff members. The two officers were fined, but they continue to work at the Bruchsal prison. Following the arrest of the suspected accomplice, investigations by the Landau Prosecutor's Office and Criminal Inspectorate continue. Among other things, his electronic devices have been seized and are now being analyzed.
