Culture - Plans for new stage building become more concrete
The planned new construction of the Frankfurt City Theaters is moving forward. A framework agreement for the land on Neue Mainzer Straße, where the new building for the theater is planned, is now available. The City of Frankfurt, Landesbank Hessen-Thuringen, and the Frankfurter Sparkasse have negotiated this, as reported by Mayor Mike Josef and Cultural Administrator Ina Hartwig (both SPD).
A "Memorandum of Understanding" between the partners was already signed in the summer of 2023, but the details were not yet settled at that time. Now, it has been agreed: A leasehold agreement with a term of 199 years is to be concluded. The leasehold right is to be paid for with a one-time payment of 210 million Euro. In the memorandum, a one-time payment of 35 million Euro plus annual payments of 1.99 million Euro were initially planned.
The leasehold agreement must now be presented to the city council for approval. After approval from the city council and the banks, the architectural competition can be initiated. On the 5,500 square meter plot, not only the new theater is planned, but also a new building up to 175 meters high. It is planned to rebuild the opera at its current location, Willy-Brandt-Platz, at a later date.
