For years, the future of the Dresden Robotron-Canteen from DDR times has been debated. A few weeks ago, the city council gave the green light for broad cultural usage - now the money is also available.

culture institutions - Plans for Dresden Robotron-Canteen realizable due to funding

With the promised federal funding of four million Euro, the old canteen of the former East German computer manufacturer Robotron can be renovated and finally turned into an art residence. Combined with own funds and a "generous" private donation, the gradual development of the listed building into an international cultural and meeting place is possible, as the city art house announced on Friday. It belongs to the nationwide projects for urban development that have been selected. The city intends to make the "Solitaire Building" as a monument of post-war modernism "with high identification value" usable for contemporary art and a meeting place for the city community.

The VEB Robotron was the largest computer manufacturer of the DDR, with headquarters and development department located in Dresden. The canteen of the combine, a example of Ostmoderne, has been saved from demolition and has been the desired domicile of the organizers of the international art exhibition Ostrale for years, which has been taking place there every two years. In May, the city council decided to acquire, renovate and make it usable as a new home for the Dresden Art Museum and the Ostrale Biennale - and took a "decisive" contribution from the Dresden bankers' family Arnhold living in the USA for it.

  1. The renovation of the canteen in Saxony's Dresden, once a symbol of East Germany's Robotron, is set to transform it into a future home for contemporary art, thanks to four million Euro in federal funding and additional contributions.
  2. As part of the nationwide urban development projects selected, the historic "Solitaire Building" in Dresden will be revitalized, becoming a cultural institution that fosters artistic expression and serves as a community meeting place.
  3. The future of the international art exhibition Ostrale in East Germany's Dresden is secured, with the former canteen of the VEB Robotron now set to serve as a permanent residence for the Dresden Art Museum and the Ostrale Biennale.
  4. This cultural transformation in Dresden's landscape will not only preserve the architectural significance of the post-war modernist "Solitaire Building" but also foster a more engaged and interconnected city society through art and creative expression.
