Pistorius voices concern over escalating extremism in France
Federal Defense Minister Boris Pistorius weighed in on the forthcoming French Parliament election, voicing concerns about the rising popularity of radical parties. "Nationalism hasn't been the answer to issues, but rather a contributing factor to them," Pistorius stated at a gathering of the Weimar Triangle in Paris.
"It's a lesson from European history that we can't ignore," underscored the SPD politician. "And I'd surely be thrilled if the voting results bolstered the democratic, liberal, pro-European forces and shaped Europe's future."
After the surge of the far-right during the European election in France, President Emmanuel Macron advocated for bringing forward parliamentary elections. The first round occurs this Sunday.
The Euroskeptic and right-wing faction, Rassemblement National (RN) led by Marine Le Pen, are predicted to be the dominant force in the National Assembly according to polls. If this occurs, the faction would head the new French government. The Weimar Triangle comprises Germany, France, and Poland.
