Peru's ex-President Fujimori released
Fujimori ruled Peru with a heavy hand for more than ten years. In 2007, he was sentenced to 25 years in prison for crimes against humanity. Now the Constitutional Court has reinstated a pardon for the ex-president, thus initiating his release.
In Peru, the Constitutional Court has ordered the immediate release of former President Alberto Fujimori, who was sentenced to many years in prison. The Constitutional Court instructed the responsible authorities to "arrange for the immediate release of Alberto Fujimori", according to a ruling. The 85-year-old has been in prison since 2009 and has been in poor health for some time.
Fujimori ruled Peru with a heavy hand from 1990 to 2000. In 2007, he was sentenced to 25 years in prison for crimes against humanity. Among other things, this involved massacres committed by death squads in the early 1990s in the fight against the guerrilla organization Shining Path.
Fujimori also ordered his security forces to take rigorous action against left-wing and allegedly subversive forces, and the parliament was disempowered. Tens of thousands of indigenous women were forcibly sterilized during his term of office in order to reduce their number of children. They were seen as an obstacle to development.
Pardon already issued in 2017
With its decision, the Constitutional Court has reinstated a pardon granted to Fujimori in 2017 by the then Peruvian President Pablo Kuczynski - which was revoked in 2018 following massive protests. There is no right of appeal against the decision now made by the Constitutional Court.
The former president repeatedly suffers from breathing difficulties and neurological problems as well as high blood pressure. He has already been transferred from prison to hospital several times.
