Are Houthi rebels behind it?

Pentagon reports attack on US warship in the Red Sea

The British military reports a suspected drone attack and explosions in the Red Sea. Shortly afterwards, the news comes from Washington: US ships have been attacked. However, it is not yet clear by whom.

A US warship and several merchant ships have been attacked in the Red Sea. "We are aware of reports of attacks on the USS Carney and merchant ships in the Red Sea and will provide information as it becomes available," the Pentagon announced. The British military had previously reported a suspected drone attack and explosions in the Red Sea, without providing further details.

Washington did not initially provide any details about the attackers. However, the Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen have repeatedly attacked ships in the Red Sea in recent weeks and fired drones and missiles towards Israel, which is waging war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The current attack on the US fleet in Yemen also began at around 10 a.m. and lasted up to five hours, a US official told the Associated Press (AP). The Houthis have not yet issued a statement. However, a military spokesman for the rebels is said to have announced an "important" statement.

The Houthis see themselves as part of the self-proclaimed "Axis of Resistance" directed against Israel. This also includes other Iranian-backed groups such as the radical Islamic Hamas and the Shiite Islamist Hezbollah militia in Lebanon. Since the beginning of the war between Israel and Hamas in response to the latter's brutal attack on Israeli territory, the Houthi rebels have fired drones and missiles at Israel on several occasions.

At the beginning of November, the Houthis captured a vehicle transport ship connected to Israel in the Red Sea off Yemen. The rebels are still holding the ship near the port city of Hodeida. Also last week, missiles struck near another US warship after it provided support to an Israeli-linked vessel that was briefly captured by gunmen.
