- Penalty for intoxicated driving: Leading figure from the CDU needs to pay €8,000
In a turn of events, Brandenburg's CDU chairperson, Jan Redmann, has been slapped with a whopping fine of 8,000 euros. This penalty was issued by the district court in Potsdam, consisting of 25 daily fines of 320 euros each. The charges were for reckless driving under the influence of alcohol. As a consequence, Redmann's driving license will be suspended for an additional six months.
Redmann's Alcohol Level Surpassing the Legal Limit
It was announced by the CDU in Brandenburg that Redmann, aged 44, had agreed to pay the fine. Apart from being the chairperson, he also serves as the CDU's parliamentary group leader in the Brandenburg state parliament and is the leading candidate for the state election on September 22.
During a nighttime ride on an E-scooter to his apartment in Potsdam in July, Redmann was apprehended by the police. After the ride, he confessed to having a blood alcohol level of approximately 1.3 Promille. A blood alcohol level of 1.1 Promille is considered a criminal offense. Subsequently, Redmann acknowledged his mistake and publicly disclosed the information.
Redmann's Aspirations for Minister-President
Redmann is participating in the election campaign to become the next Minister-President following Dietmar Woidke (SPD). However, according to a recent poll conducted in early August, the CDU lagged behind both the SPD (20 percent) and the AfD (24 percent).
The CDU in Brandenburg revealed that Redmann, in accordance with the decision, will pay the imposed fine. Following this incident, the Commission might need to reconsider Redmann's position as the leading candidate for the state election.
