Pehnt awarded the German Literature Fund Prize

The writer Annette Pehnt has been awarded the Grand Prize of the German Literature Fund. The prize, awarded for the fourth time, was presented on Monday evening at the Literary Colloquium Berlin, according to the Literature Fund. The award is endowed with 50,000 euros.

The jury reportedly honored the author's entire oeuvre and "with particular respect" the novel "Die schmutzige Frau", which was published in 2023. In this latest work, she has made the author's work itself the subject in an original way. The author lives in Freiburg im Breisgau and Hildesheim.

In a statement, Minister of State for Culture Claudia Roth (Greens) spoke of her "due respect" for Pehnt's "impressive body of work". "At first reading, her language often seems almost laconic. However, as the book progresses, it always proves to be proof of Annette Pehnt's precise powers of observation and her ability to depict the scenes of interpersonal relationships in family life, friendships or everyday working life."

The award is reportedly one of the most highly endowed literary prizes in Germany. The German Literature Fund, which is based in Darmstadt, promotes contemporary German-language literature "supra-regionally, independently of the market and beyond political guidelines".
