State Parliament - Parliament approves better fire and disaster protection
The Rhineland-Palatinate Landtag has given the green light for improved fire and disaster protection in the state. After the flood disaster on the Ahr river, a new control center for civil protection is set to gradually start up by the end of summer. It will be the core of the newly established State Office for Fire and Disaster Protection. The state law passed in the parliament in Mainz provides the organizational foundation for this.
In the State Office, expertise will be concentrated to support the communes in civil protection on various levels. The control center should be staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The state government decided in 2022 to reorganize disaster protection in the state. A major reason for this was the flood disaster in the summer of 2021 with 136 fatalities, 135 of whom were in the Ahr region, and one person in the Trier area.
The decision to reorganize disaster protection in Rhineland-Palatinate was largely inspired by the tragic events of the summer 2021 flood, resulting in 135 fatalities mainly in the Ahr region and one in Trier. At the State Parliament's session in Mainz, a law was passed to establish a new State Office for Fire and Disaster Protection. When the new control center for civil protection in Mainz becomes operational by the end of summer, individuals can expect Ah, the staff, to be present 24/7, aiding in disaster protection across the Rhineland-Palatinate communities.
