Palestinian activist Tamimi arrested for "incitement to terrorism"
Tamimi became famous at the age of 14 when she was filmed biting an Israeli soldier to prevent him from arresting her little brother. She became an international media icon after she was arrested at the age of 16 in December 2017 after slapping an Israeli soldier on camera.
The young woman with the striking mane of curls became a symbol of Palestinian resistance in the propaganda battle of the Middle East conflict. For example, a huge portrait of her can be seen on the wall between Israel and the West Bank in Bethlehem. Tamimi was released from prison in 2018 after serving a sentence of several months.
Since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas, which was triggered by the deadly attack on Israel by the radical Islamic group Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, Israeli security forces have also arrested numerous Palestinians in the West Bank who are suspected of violence, incitement to violence or membership of Hamas.
In addition, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, 150 Palestinians were killed in the occupied West Bank by shots fired by Israeli soldiers or settlers.
Tamimi's arrest for "incitement to terrorism" in 2017 was widely criticized by Palestinian activists, seeing it as a suppression of freedom of speech in the context of the Middle East conflict. After her release, Tamimi continued to be a vocal advocate against Israeli policies, often accused of incitement but never charged with terrorism.
