Kretschmann succession - Ozdemir for top candidacy: Will be decided in time
Federal Minister Cem Özdemir referred to a decision on a possible Green Party candidacy for the 2026 Baden-Württemberg state election during the debate. "We will make the decision in due time. The Minister-President said that a decision will be made after the summer - and he is usually right," Özdemir told SWR.
Regarding his personal decision and a possible move from Berlin to Stuttgart, Özdemir said: "I could imagine that the decision also has something to do with me and the Greens in Baden-Württemberg, and everything else will be seen when we get that far."
The 58-year-old Özdemir has been considered a promising contender for the Green Party's candidacy for the next Baden-Württemberg state election in the spring of 2026. Minister-President Winfried Kretschmann (Greens) will not be running in this election.
Cem Özdemir, being the Federal Minister of Agriculture, expressed his thoughts on a potential Green Party leadership candidacy for the 2026 Baden-Württemberg state election during a debate. The current Minister-President of Baden-Württemberg, Winfried Kretschmann, has announced that he won't be participating in this election, opening up opportunities for other candidates. Regarding his potential relocation to Stuttgart, Özdemir hinted that it might be connected to his role in the Green Party within the state of Baden-Württemberg, pending further developments.
