Overflowing Elbe River waters have inundated Dresden.
The peak of the Elbe flood has touched Downtown Dresden. As per the Saxon Flood Centre, the Elbe level in the state capital hit 6.09 meters on Thursday morning, surpassing the warning level of stage three.
Even though the water levels were expected to decrease throughout the day, they were anticipated to drop below the alarm stage three threshold of 6 meters in Dresden by evening.
Similarly, the water level at the Schöna gauge on the Czech border was still within the alarm stage three range, with a gradual decline. At warning stage three, urban areas, roads, and railways may experience flooding. Initially, the Elbe levels in Riesa and Torgau, locations below Dresden, went up slightly on Thursday, but remained well below the warning stage three.
However, the flood crest will continue its journey downstream of the Elbe, heading towards Saxony-Anhalt and Brandenburg. In these regions, rising water levels are predicted over the next few days. The levels in Neiße and Oder in Brandenburg are also on the rise.
Despite the anticipated decrease in water levels in Dresden, they were predicted to stay above the stage two threshold until evening. Maintaining levels at or above stage three can lead to significant urban flooding and disruptions to transportation systems.
