Italy Undergoes Changes in Government Amidst Ongoing Political Crisis - Overcrowded cruiser: 2500 police officers living in rundown ship for G7 summit.
At the upcoming G7 meet in Apulia, Italy, the elite participants will be housed in a luxurious beach hotel at Borgo Egnazia. However, the 2,500 police officers assigned for the summit's protection were not so lucky. Their living conditions on the dilapidated cruise ship "Mykonos Magic," according to the police union COISP, were far from comfortable, with "terrible sanitary conditions."
The ship was later seized, and the police officers were transferred to hotels. The "Mykonos Magic," which had been operated by Costa Cruises and is now with the Greek ferry company Seajets, was allegedly filled with "usable toilets, dilapidated showers, and flooded cabins."
At least 2,500 police officers were dispatched from all over Italy for security
"La Repubblica" disclosed that the officers endured terrible temperatures, with non-functional air conditioning, water falling from the ceiling, and had to wait for hours to receive a cold meal. To alleviate the unbearable heat, they had to keep their cabin doors open.
SILF, another police union, lamented that the police officers had to live like mice in a trap on the ship. The G7 summit involves the presence of leaders like German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and US President Joe Biden; hence, law enforcement forces were brought in from all over Italy to Apulia.
