Over twenty-two fatalities due to cholera in Sudan.
Amidst the strife-torn nation of Sudan, cholera is rapidly gaining momentum. As per Health Minister Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim's statement on Sunday, at least 22 individuals have succumbed to this infectious disease in the past fortnight. The ministry has additionally verified over 350 new cases.
The World Health Organization has also noted the persistent cholera outbreaks in Sudan. From January 1 till July 28, they documented 78 fatalities and 2,400 confirmed cases. However, Minister Ibrahim did not specify the particular duration his statistics pertained to.
A year and a half ago, the tension between the RSF paramilitary group and the Sudanese military forces erupted into a full-blown civil war. Regrettably, countless lives have been lost, and numerous regions are now teetering on the edge of starvation.
Cholera is a highly debilitating infection that triggers intense diarrhea and could potentially result in severe dehydration and death within hours if left unattended. It spreads via ingesting polluted food or water.
More people are at risk of contracting cholera due to the ongoing civil war and instability in Sudan. To combat this, there is a need for more resources and international aid to provide clean water and improve sanitation conditions.
