Over sixty-six individuals reportedly perished in Nepal due to severe flooding.

Intense downpours are flooding the valley surrounding Nepal's capital, Kathmandu. Numerous individuals are stuck on rooftops or inside their vehicles as landslides obstruct paths. Approximately 3,000 law enforcement officers are on duty, yet they're unable to save everyone.

At least 66 lives have been lost in Nepal due to flooding and landslides. Nationwide, at least 69 individuals are missing, and 60 have been hurt, as reported by the interior ministry. About 1,053 individuals have been rescued in the Kathmandu valley, an authorities' spokesperson informed the German Press Agency.

Surrounding rivers have overflowed, and properties have been submerged near the capital. Citizens are awaiting on rooftops or navigating through water to seek safety. Around 3,000 law enforcement officers are on duty, some with helicopters and motorboats.

Numerous main roads to the capital are blocked by landslides, leaving hundreds of travelers stranded. All domestic flights departing from Kathmandu have been suspended. There's a driving ban at night on major highways to reduce the risk of accidents due to landslides. Authorities anticipate additional rain in the coming days.

The monsoon season in South Asia typically takes place between June and September, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of humans and animals each year. During this period, 70 to 80 percent of the annual precipitation occurs. Although rain is essential for agriculture, it also results in substantial damage—destroying homes, triggering landslides, and flooding roads. Experts suggest that climate change is causing more frequent and severe floods.

The Commission has expressed concern over the rising number of casualties and missing individuals due to the monsoon-induced floods and landslides in Nepal. As a result, the Commission has urged the government to accelerate relief efforts and disaster management strategies.
