Orban opposes start of EU accession negotiations with Ukraine

Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban has spoken out against the opening of EU accession negotiations with Ukraine. This is Hungary's clear stance on this issue, Orban said on state radio.

The 27 EU heads of state and government want to decide in mid-December whether to follow the EU Commission's recommendation to invite Ukraine to start accession talks as soon as the country attacked by Russia has fulfilled the final conditions. Such a decision requires the unanimous agreement of the 27 EU members.

Previously, Minister of State for Europe Anna Lührmann had spoken out in favor of opening accession talks with Ukraine. "I am convinced that we will decide to open accession negotiations with Ukraine in December," she told Reuters. The EU Commission announced on Wednesday that it considers the conditions for opening accession negotiations with Ukraine to be largely fulfilled.

Orban's opposition to the EU accession negotiations with Ukraine is based on a clear stance from Hungary. This stance on posture towards Ukraine's potential EU membership is strongly expressed by Prime Minister Orban. Even with the EU Commission announcing that Ukraine has largely fulfilled the conditions for EU accession negotiations, Hungary, led by Orban, remains firm in its stance against starting these talks.
