OpenAI's Sam Altman pledges to donate a majority of his fortune through the Giving Pledge initiative.

In a letter published last Tuesday, Sam Altman and his husband Oliver Mulherin thanked "the countless hours of hard work, ingenious minds, and selfless hearts" that have contributed to creating the societal infrastructure that allowed them to achieve their success.

The couple expressed their desire to "return the favor, committing to pass on this opportunity by building up the scaffolding a little higher."

As reported by Bloomberg, Altman's net worth exceeds $2 billion, with a significant portion stemming from his investments in startups, one of which being Reddit. Unlike his financial ties to OpenAI, a leading company in artificial intelligence, he does not hold a stake in the firm.

The Giving Pledge was initiated in 2010 by billionaires Warren Buffett and ex-couple, Bill and Melinda French Gates. Their goal was to motivate the richest individuals in the world to pledge at least half of their fortunes towards charities or philanthropic endeavors, either during their lifetimes or through their wills.

This initiative doesn't involve any legal agreements; instead, it serves as a moral obligation. According to the campaign's website, its main purpose is to "spark discussion, not just about the amount but also for what reasons and purpose."

There are currently over 245 individuals and couples from 30 countries who have signed up.

Gates announced the donation of a staggering $1 billion over the next few years to advance women's rights worldwide through her organization, Pivotal Ventures. This pledge was made public shortly after she stepped down from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, where she previously held a position, following her divorce from her ex-husband. As part of their divorce settlement, Melinda received $12.5 billion from the foundation.
