OpenAI unveils new safety committee amidst employee uprising

In a recent article, OpenAI revealed the formation of a new committee. This committee will be spearheaded by CEO Sam Altman, alongside board chair Bret Taylor and board member Nicole Seligman.

This announcement comes after the high-profile resignation of an OpenAI executive in charge of safety, Jan Leike. Leike's departure was triggered by concerns over the company's underinvestment in AI safety efforts and heightened tensions with OpenAI's management.

Additionally, the departure of Ilya Sutskever was noteworthy. Sutskever was a crucial member of OpenAI's "superalignment" team, which aimed to make sure AI development aligns with human needs and priorities. Sutskever played a significant role in Altman's previous ousting as CEO, only to later back Altman's reinstatement.

Extending this series of changes, an OpenAI representative told CNN that disbanding the superalignment team and relocating its members throughout the organization would facilitate better achievement of OpenAI's superalignment objectives.

In their blog post on Tuesday, OpenAI also disclosed their progress towards developing a fresh AI model to replace the current one driving ChatGPT. They shared their belief that this new model - which would follow GPT-4 - is a significant stride towards artificial general intelligence.

The company concluded by stating their eagerness for a vigorous debate on this crucial matter. The Safety and Security Committee's first task will be to examine and advance OpenAI's protocols and defenses within the next 90 days. Upon completion of this task, the committee will share their proposals with the board. After thorough review by the board, OpenAI will disclose an update on the adopted recommendations, ensuring transparency while maintaining safety and security.
