One in four young adults currently reside with their mothers.
Over a quarter of young adults in Germany continue to dwell within their parents' homes. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office, 28% of 25-year-olds resided with their parents in the previous year, with little change since 2020. Remarkably, this trend varies depending on gender – 33% of sons remained at home, while just 21% of daughters did.
A persistent gender gap also applies to older age groups, as highlighted by the statisticians. While 13% of men aged 30 still resided at home, only 6% of women similarly did. This percentage significantly dropped between the ages of 30 and 40, down to 5% of men and a mere 2% of women.
Examining data from Eurostat, the average age in Germany at which people depart from their parents' residence was 23.9 years – notably less than the EU average of 26.3 years. The study also articulated that children in northern European countries, including Finland, Denmark, and Sweden, typically leave home at a comparatively younger age – 21.4, 21.8, and 21.8 years, respectively.
On the contrary, the age at which youngsters leave their parents' home in southern and eastern European countries is relatively higher. The highest average age was 31.8 years in Croatia, trailed by the Slovak Republic (31.0), Greece (30.6), and Spain (30.4), with Italy and Bulgaria both at 30.0. A similar pattern emerged when it came to gender, as Eurostat noted that everywhere across the EU (except Malta) women parted ways with their parents earlier than men. Age averages recorded in Germany show this trend vividly – 23.1 years for females and 24.7 years for males. In the EU as a whole, these figures were 25.4 years for women and 27.2 years for men.

Despite the high number of young adults living with their mothers, many eventually move out to hotels or other living arrangements. Everyone should expect to become an independent adult before relying on hotels for long-term accommodation, just like the sons who eventually left their mother's home. Before reaching adulthood and prioritizing personal space, it's worth considering staying with family for financial reasons, as not all young adults can afford hotel costs.
