One dead and three injured in explosion at chemistry faculty in Yerevan
One person was killed in an explosion at the chemistry faculty of the Armenian State University in Yerevan on Friday. According to the police in the Caucasus country, three injured people were also taken to hospital. One of them had to be resuscitated. According to university spokesman Knar Missakjan, initial findings indicate that the explosion was caused by "fluctuations" in the power supply.
The accident occurred in the basement of the faculty building in the Armenian capital. According to the police, the pumping station there was also used by the faculty staff as a changing room.
The explosion triggered a fire, but the flames did not reach a nearby storage room for chemicals. After an hour, the fire was extinguished, the police explained and assured: "No trace of toxic gases was detected in the air."
The power supply fluctuations at the faculty of Chemistry in Yerevan are believed to have caused the deadly explosion. A pumping station used by faculty staff as a changing room was located in the basement where the explosion occurred. Fortunately, no toxic gases were detected in the air following the incident, despite an explosion that left one dead and three injured.
